Weird character on notifications and elsewhere, please help

Hi, I am having weird characters/unreadable text on notifications and other text such as in contacts, please see the attached screen.

Can anyone please help? This is a ZTE Blade V7 Lite that I just bought used off of eBay.

It doesn't even look Chinese, the phone is all set to English etc, it's not even a language it's just weird characters

That looks like the phone doesn't have any font in which to display those characters. It might be set to English, but it might have a Chinese (or Japanese or Hindu) font.

Thank you for your reply, as a bit of an Android n00b (fixing this for my girlfriends mum), how would I go about fixing / installing the font?

Installing fonts in Android is iffy - it can often lead to problems. Which is why you should buy a phone designed for the language you speak.

If it were mine, I'd search for how to flash a new ROM (I'd give you links, but I don't know how to flash a ZTE), and for a ROM of the current version - in English. Then I'd back up everything (see Backing up an Android Device) and flash the new ROM.
