Why does my brand new LG HD tribute smartphone only work on speakerphone?

Ok I am beyond frustrated/annoyed because I only had my phone for 5 days and the day i brought it home it quit working. I cannot hear anyone when they call me or I call them unless on speakerphone. This is very stressful for me as some conversations I have are private/important and it only seems to work on speaker phone mode. I checked all the settings and couldn't find anything that helped. Anyone else having this issue? Any help would be very much appreciated and I am hoping the issue can be resolved without having to pay to fix it or buy a new one, thanks so much

The earpiece (the part you put to your ear) is probably shot. Bring it back (or, if you got it by mail, ask for an RMA (return material authorization)) and a replacement phone. (Back up everything first - see Backing up an Android Device.)
