Galaxy S8: Google App Back Button Issue

Hello. I am using the Galaxy S8 on Android 7.0 with the TouchWiz launcher and I like the look and feel of the Google app, except for a rather bothersome issue of the back button taking me to the home screen.

When I open the Google app from the app drawer, the back button works just fine. I am reading an article and when I'm finished, I press back, and it takes me to the previous page.

However, if I open the app via the Google widget on the home screen, if I go to any page, pressing the back button closes the app and takes me to the home screen, forcing me to navigate back to where I left off.

Is anybody else having this issue and is there a way to get around this other than not using the widget?

Thank you.

EDIT:This is the Google widget that is just the search bar, and not the Chrome search bar.

I have S8 and third party launcher. When I close an article from Google search bar news stories, it brings be back to this app, the last thing I was on.

Hmm. It could be that the widget is a touchwiz widget.

Does the s8 still have the option to use Google search on a long press of the home button? I generally use that instead (you can remove the search widget since it would be useless now). It should work like opening the app from the app drawer.

I have disabled any default assistance programs so long pressing the home screen does nothing.

I tried turning it back on to see what it is like again, but that was solely for searching things up on Google. I personally use the widget as a means of either searching or browsing the articles below the search bar in app.

Yes, having same issue! It's maddening. Back button or X at top left of screen tagged me back to my last app, not the stream of news items. However, once I get to the next page of news items, it works as expected. So annoying!
