Hello, I have recently received a secondhand HTC One M8 phone from my family after my previous phone hard bricked. To my knowledge, it was not rooted nor tampered with in any way.

I received a notification about a pending update to Android OS 6, and so I accepted the update and allowed it to download and install. After it did that, it rebooted to the white HTC One screen, and stayed that way for 20 minutes.

After that, I noticed that the phone was heating up, almost burning to the touch. In my haste, I manually rebooted the phone (holding down power + volume up + volume down). It cycled through the Sprint logo screen, and then once again remained on the HTC logo. I decided to wait, in case it was loading, but the battery drained, and after charging, it still had the issue.

After that, I rebooted into the bootloader and factory reset the phone. No change. I loaded into recover and deleted the cache. No change. I loaded back into recovery and factory reset from there. No change. I attempted to load into fastboot and connect to my desktop Windows PC for use with the HTC Sync Manager, but while my computer recognized the hardware (it showed up under Device Manager), HTC Sync did not recognize any phones. I was unable to access the phone's files with my computer directly.

I tried a 3rd party app that functions like Sync Manager (Forgot the name, already removed it from my PC), but it also could not detect the phone. The stats on the Bootloader are as follows:

    *** Locked ***

Though I am experienced with computers, this is the first time I'm using a smartphone like this. I am a student, so I don't really have the funds to spare on purchasing a replacement or paying for someone to fix it.

I would love a bit of help on the subject.

Bring it to your carrier, tell them that the update broke the phone, and ask what they can do about it. (It's not a warranty matter, it's a liability matter - they broke your phone.)
