Why do I have to use my area code on local calls?

In the past, I did not have to key in my area code on local calls. Recently I have had to. Is this new?

Welcome to Android Central! It depends on where you live. If your area has area code overlays (i.e., multiple area codes for the same area), then you have to enter the area code, even if it's the same as yours. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten-digit_dialing
