Why do Gmail mails open automatically over my other apps?

I asked this specifically on the Note 8 forum...

Sometimes (a couple of times a day), I will be using any of a number of apps, usually YouTube, Photoshop, GoSMS, FB, etc., and during a transition of some kind, Gmail will open and display a mail. This never happens with a personal mail, but seems to happen with mails built like ads.

I have had this happen twice in the last hour, once when I was transitioning the phone from landscape to portrait mode in FaceBook, and the other when I unlocked the phone. Both times, an Ad that was received as a legit email was displayed, fullscreen.

For reference, my gmail account has been around long enough that most of my email is ads, and I almost never open emails at all. So, to find emails being opened that I would NEVER open voluntarily is a bit disconcerting. (No, I'm not interested in your current deals, Enterprise... Thanks.)

I have checked, and these are not adware messages that LOOK like emails. They are messages that have legitimately shown up in my Gmail box and are visible from the phone AND desktop.

Anyone know a setting that causes this, or some software that might be doing this beyond what I'm aware of?

Phone is Note 8 SM-N950U on Verizon, Android 7.1.1, Samsung Experince level 8.5 , Build number NMF26X.N950USQU1AQI5.
