How, do, get, my, android, to, actually, get, the, updates, it, keeps, telling, me, are, available?

I am on Wi-Fi but all the phone will do is tell me that my systm is up to date. Of course, about an hour ago it sadi 6 updates available.

Those 6 updates are apps, it sounds like you were looking at the system update in settings. Open the Play Store, slide in the menu from the left and tap the my apps item, this will show you your installed apps that have updates pending.
