[Android Central Question]

Since the new update, I get notifications at the top of the screen (for email and text), which I can't stand, and when I clear them, the icon badges disappear. I have unread email and text messages piling up. From what I have read in forums there is no fix for this and many are displeased. Get it together Samsung, pay over $1000 for these phones just for you to go and make whatever changes you feel like, regardless of how annoying and frustrating to your users.
This isn't the first time you've pulled this.
Last Samsung I buy.

The badges in Oreo are notification badges. As soon as you have no notifications for that app, its badge goes away. You need a launcher like Nova (the paid version, using the Tesla addin) that shows you the number of unread items for the app, not the number of notifications.

I don't think you can blame this on Samsung - I have a new LG G7 and have the same problem. I don't like all of the social media clutter on my notifications feed, but appreciate knowing how many notifications I have in the icon badges, which I can more easily ignore/compartmentalize.

It's a combination of blame. Samsung had a functioning notification badge system that a lot of people seemed to like. Google added it to Oreo, to the extent that you're seeing, so Samsung decided not to "reinvent the wheel" when developing the Samsung Experience for Oreo so they left Google's alone, with one enhancement - a counter when there are multiple notifications for an app or apps within a folder.

It was actually a function of a few 3rd party launchers long before Samsung came out with it.
