I edited a photo on my Samsung galaxy note 5. When I opened the photo it said downloading picture for some reason then brought up the editing screen as usual. I cropped the photo and saved but now I cannot find the original. I've read the previous instructions on trying to re-edit but that does not help. My original is neither in Google photos nor my Samsung gallery. How do I recover or find the original?

The phone has to be rooted. then use any deleted file recovery app, like DiskDigger, and hope it hasn't been overwritten.

In the future, make a copy of the file and edit the copy. If it disappears, you can just make another copy.
