My messages show multiple badges for 1 text

I just bought a Samsung s9 plus. Ever since I set it up, I have been getting several text message badges but when I click on messages and it opens, I will have just 1 message.

Welcome to Android Central! Sorry, but when you say "multiple badges," do you mean that the unread count badge on the Messaging app says you have 2 or 3 unread messages, where in fact you only have one?

Correct. My badge shows anywhere from 3 to 5 messages and it will in fact only be one message. Also, a new phenomenon to me. When I text friends, my message to them is in green and to my wife it is in blue. The friends have the typical 160 character remaining displayed when I open their messages and my wife has 8000 next to hers

Go to Settings>Apps, tap Menu>Show System, and look for something like BadgeProvider. Select it and tap Storage, then Clear Cache/Clear Data. Now see if the problem persists.

Sorry, but I'm not sure about the message colors.

As for your wife's phone - Android or iPhone? iPhones don't use SMS, so the limits are different.
