using messenger without facebook account

Everything I've read tells me I can use messenger on my phone and tablet without having a facebook account. When I install messenger on my phone or tablet and create an account it sends me a text with a verification code. On the screen where I should be typing this code it says that what I have done is abusive and it shuts me down. Any ideas?

Can you share a screenshot or the exact text of what you're seeing? Is that only on the Messenger app or when you get the code? It usually just picks it up automatically when the text with the code is received (not even needed for you to input it), but if that doesn't work, then yeah, manual input should be possible.
