I had my phone out laying beside on a screen I was looking off of. I didn't touch it when it suddenly restarted itself. This happens a lot so I usually ignore it but after it restarted an encrypted screen thing popped up and told me to enter my phones password. After I entered the password the phone did an unwanted and unexpected factory reset. I lost everything from photos to apps to contacts. I just want to know why and how this happened? It's a j3 samsung plus.

    Welcome.

Spontaneous resets do sometimes happen. I don't know why.

If your phone has been restarting a lot, or even at all, you ought to try to find out why. There are various possible reasons, both hardware and software.
