I have reset to factory a Note8 but I cant' set up the phone which belonged to a friend because it wants a password when there never was one. Or it says use Google account. Does that mean just his google password or his email or what? The email is too long. What do they mean by use Google account? The current password or the one that was used at the time the oriringla owner set up the phone? I have the latter and can get the former. I imagine the original is what they want but also I am not aiming to import data. Just want to set up the phone for myself btu previous owner gave permission to use his account info. i can connect to my wifi and then i'm stuck

The device is locked to prevent theft. Only the original account that set it up can disable it (same e-mail/password, obviously).
I have that information. It was given to me by the owner. where is says "or use google account" what do they want? the password to the google account when the phone was originally set up? I HAVE THAT. I also have what is apparently a google generated password from the time the phone was purchased. Furthermore, the original owner never had or created a password for the phone so i has to be either his google account or what? it's not ............@gmail.com is it? That doesn't fit.

Use your friend's Google account -- it would be the email address associated with their account (usually a Gmail address, but not always).

If there's a 2-factor authentication required, you may still have to ask your friend to help with that after entering the account and password.

the email address doesn't fit on the line provided. I tried. there is not 2 factor authentication that i know of. i tried putting in soandso@gmail.com. It's too long. I tried putting just his name. i tried the password at the time he go the phone. nothing is working. thx

My friend got the phone up and functioning bc fortuhere is a two step verification now which was not previously there. When I wanted to go into the play store to put on some apps (I don't buy apps) they wanted verification info. None of this was the case before, Isthere a way to obviate all this?

Also i had the luck of NOT being signed into my google account before the phone got screwed up but now I am (for him to set up the phone,) is there a way for me to NOT be signed in? I lucked out before I think

Verification in the Play Store is for the protection of the user, so that someone else doesn't start making purchases on the user's account. It also does require a form of payment to be filed, even if you never plan on buying anything.

Couple problems here
You got a device from a friend that didn't delete their account, possibly your friend bout it with someone's else account also , whatever the case it will ask the last known Google account put in the device when initially set up and no one was properly deleting their accounts because your factory resetting in recovery instead of in the phone settings ,the reason you can't see the full account of that Gmail for theft protection.

You have 2 choices , you and your friend have to figure it out or move on from the device.

Nothing we can help with this in the forum, unfortunately I'll have to close this topic from going any further about skipping steps or bypassing security features
