I've tried to disable this through settings, through the actual "app" for the clock, as well as through Moto Display, to no avail. It's just distracting to me when the phone illuminates, and I'd rather it not attract my attention unless there's a text or email or other notification I need to see. Any ideas for how to make this stop? Thanks for your help with this.

Welcome to the forums. Unfortunately no. Moto Display is an all or nothing feature and it doesn't include many options to change the way it looks. You can always disable it and use the ambient display to check your notifications on the lock screen.

    Go to Settings
    Apps
    Moto display.... disable it
    Done!
Your phone will function fine without this App.
