Why does my phone hang up when I answer it?

Android Central Question

I hear a bit of the phone call, enough to determine who it is, but nothing more, and the call is ended automatically by the phone. Makes me seem like a terribly rude person. How do I stop my phone from doing this?

The cell signal is fine. It only happens with calls I answer. I can make an outgoing call with no difficulty.
When there's no internet/cell signal it won't even ring and goes immediately to voicemail.

I don't put it to my ear. I answer then put on speaker phone to hear because I have a hearing problem. The screen stays active, but switches to a call ended report screen before I have a chance to do anything.

What phone do you have? Are you using a screen protector? Is it possible that the screen protector is blocking the proximity sensor?

The OP mentioned having a Galaxy S6 on Sprint. A screen protector blocking the proximity sensor could explain the screen going black as soon as a call is made, but it shouldn't cause the call to be disconnected.
