Google apps not connect or syncing with 3rd party apps

I first found the issue attempting to connect my Google Fit account to my fitness Pal, I got as far as selecting which Google account to connect which open a white box with the "spinning ring" working icon and the login process does not complete.

Investigating further I have found that activities from other already connected apps have not synced with Google fit. I have also downloaded a number of different apps that allow use of Google credentials to create an account, all of these hang after selecting which Google account to use.

I have tried several device restarts, checked that all apps are running the latest updates, cleared the caches of the apps, tried 3 different WiFi networks but nothing has solved the problem.

I'm running a Pixel 2 XL on Android 9 with the 1st August 2019 security patch.

Welcome to Android Central! Open your Google Fit app, tap Profile, then tap the gear icon at the upper right. Then Manage Connected Apps. What options do you have for your connected apps and devices there?
