Android Central Question

I have a Samsung s5 Android version 6.0.1 and trying to connect phone to Android Auto display in my 2019 Subaru Sport. l tried changing the USB cable. No luck. I tried another cable still no luck. Tried someone else's phone with both cables and his phone worked. So not the cable. Since his phone worked I thought it was the version of Android on my phone, but when I checked recommended versions, 6.0 Marshmallow was recommended. Is 6.0.1 Marshmallow? Is there some phone setting that isn't correct?

The USB connection in a car radio is normally for an mp3 player, not a cellphone. You have to connect via Bluetooth to get the display you want.

Why your friend's phone worked is the mystery.

And yes, 6.0.1 is Marshmallow.

Check that your phone Settings use the Google Launcher for starting apps.

When I added Android Auto to my HTC M9 running Android 7.0, I could not get the app and my Android Auto-enabled Pioneer car radio to "shake hands."

After two weeks of chasing the problem with tech support staff from Pioneer, Best Buy (where I bought the radio and had it installed), HTC techs, I finally discovered the solution.

It turned to be very simple. Make sure you're using the Google launcher, identified in my phone & OS as "Google No...".

There is a small note in one of the forums that Android Auto must use Google services and the Google launcher is one of those services.

My understanding is that Android Auto (and Apple CarPlay) have historically needed the USB connection in order to communicate between the phone and the radio. The wireless display "casting" is a recent development. I admit - there MAY be a Bluetooth requirement as well.
