How to send a text message not in my contacts

Need to text a donation to Red Cross

That depends on what texting app you have. Generally - there's likely going to be a button on screen (when viewing the message list) that has a + sign in it, tap that, enter the short code to text to in the to field, enter the text in the body and send it.

Mine has a pen/pencil in a circle. Press that, add the number in the To: field, tap the message box, say what you want to say and hit send...
