I can't use my android without service anymore? Is Sprint forcing service?

I always had a phone that I only use with wifi and no carrier or service, today I can't connect to the internet and Sprint is sending a message telling me to activate the device and if I don't want to activate the device to refer to the return policy. Does this mean I can't use my phone with internet only anymore? Any way around this to continue using my phone the way I used to? Thanks.

It sounds as if the device hasn't been fully paid for. If that's the case, they still own it, and you have to finish paying for it or return it.

If it's paid for, remove the SIM card.

Does sound odd. I have a few devices (both Android and iOS) that I’ve had for a while and use on WiFi only with no problems.

Is this a device you’ve had a while and this just started?

And welcome to Android Central.
