[TIPS] NEW - Pre-rooted 1.1.0 update/disable 1.1 auto update (and keep root)

Updating to 1.1 breaks root and as I understand it rooting is difficult after the 1.1 update. So if you get the 1.1 OTA update, the recommendation is to downgrade then apply the pre-rooted 1.1 update using CW.

I agree, that info should be in the OP.

Thanks, Monkey.

I guess it's a good thing that the whole, "boot off an SD card, and then do any damn thing you want" method is still available to 1.1 users. But, it would be very inconvenient for some people to start from scratch, after spending a long time getting things set up "just so".

If I buy an NC this week, my impression is that it will still be running 1.0.0 when I take it out of the box. However, it will likely try to update itself to 1.1.0 just as soon as it can. That wouldn't be a tragedy for me, since I wouldn't lose anything but time if I had to downgrade again.

However, it sounds like the best strategy for me will be to flash the "pre rooted" version of 1.1.0 as soon as I can. And then do the OTA-blocking hacks to keep it there.

[EDIT] Okay, after reading a bit more, it seems that I will need to update the device to 1.0.1, before I can root it. Or, maybe I can go with the method where one runs Clockwork Recovery from a bootable SD card. It seems like I should be able to flash directly to the pre-rooted 1.1.0 from there, but maybe I'm missing something.

Worked like a charm, I didn't make any 1.1 bypass changes and just installed the pre-rooted 1.1r2 after rooting 1.0.1 from B&N. Had to use Titanium to wipe youtube but it works fine now.

woot! woot! finally, something that worked perfectly the first time! updated to 1.1.0 on my pre-rooted nookcolor.

the ONLY hesitation i had was with the instruction "reboot in CWR" - it's called reboot in recovery in the program. when you reboot, read prompts fully (selecting the zip file from sd card) then install nook file. you should come to a screen with a lot of 'no', scrolling down to the only 'yes'.

Don't panic when the file appears to hang seconds into to it - it will continue after about 3-5 minutes. once you get 'update successful' make sure to hit your power/sleep button to go back, where you then select (n button) reboot operating system or something to that effect.

good luck... it's easy if you follow the instructions AND it does work the first time.

raze

What size SDcard did you use? I couldn't fit the zip into my 8GB card!

It seems like everyone who had rooted the nook color used the autonooter method for android market and other stuff.

I decided to use nooter 0.2 from NookDev as i really wanted to keep nook interface and really only wanted to be able to install apks.

I disabled updates by renaming the OTAcert (or so I thought). Even with file renamed, 1.1.0 update came through. To my surprise, it DID NOT break my root!!

All my installed apps still work, root explorer still works, ADB still works and all enhancements of 1.1.0!!

So if I get a NC this week I shouldn't put it at 1.1 then wait for the root to come through? I imagine someone will have it rooted sooner than later.

Going up to 1.0.1 then rooting then applying 1.1 w/ root seems like a lot of effort and steps in case anything went wrong.

Just flashed v1.1.0_r2 and it worked like a champ. I had gone through the initial steps of renaming the otacerts and then updated the build.prop when those directions first came out, so decided to go ahead and do this now. The improved capability is nice, especially the pinch to zoom in the native browser. I definitely recommend doing this if you are knowledgeable enough to get it done without messing stuff up.;)

Hi all,

I've received my new NC, but I'm still waiting for my SD cards to arrive. The NC came out of the box running 1.1.0. Boo! :)

Would the following sequence get me up and running on rooted 1.1.0, starting from a stock and un-rooted 1.1.0?

  • Procure two micro SDHC cards
  • On one of them, burn that Clockwork recovery boot-able image
  • Onto the other card, copy the pre-rooted 1.1.0 .zip file thingie
  • Put the Clockwork card in, and reboot the NC
  • Once running in Clockwork, make a nandroid backup, wipe various caches, and generally do all the normal things you do prior to flashing a ROM. (Is this possible? Because at this point, I'm not rooted. Unless maybe I am. Has Clockwork bestowed temporary root-i-ness to me?)
  • Un-mount the Clockwork card, swap in the other card and re-mount.
  • Flash the rooted 1.1.0 .zip
  • Profit!!!

That seems too easy. Do I need to get root first? I hope not, because I'm a big fan of easy. :)

OK, that worked. I had to format my SDcard on the NC and it opened up the full resources of the card. Then copied the ZIP, CWed and Voila! I am rooted again with 1.1.0 update!

Thanks for all youz guys' help

Is anyone having a problem with the market after applying this rooted update 1.1.0? The market looks like the latest market with the half moon top section but the Install and Uninstall buttons are very narrow top/bottom and when I try to install apps, they start downloading, never finish downloading and the status never changes from "free" to "installed." Any ideas?

Well so much for update not breaking root!!

On the surface it appeared it did not as installed apps still work and can load apps from sd card or dropbox.

But upon getting into system with root explorer or superuser permissions, I'm locked down again and can't install su via adb as it's read only.

Safe to say my nook is no longer rooted??? But instead a 1.1.0 version with extras and app loading abilities??

I'd like to keep nook reader interface and don't want full blown root. I think I am stuck waiting for another autonooter or nooter 0.2 app to root factory 1.1.0.

If I load Froyo on sd card and run it doesn't overwrite the nook system correct? I just take card out to boot back to my unrooted 1.1.0 with benefits?

Thanks!!

the pre-rooted 1.1.0 update[/URL] onto the root of your sd card (sdcard/).

What exactly do I need to do to root that above file to my sd card? Sorry for the noobie question, but I'm certainly doing something wrong here. I've downloaded the zip file above and unzipped it. But when I go through steps 2-5 I get stuck because I get a message in clockwork saying the file is missing. Any thoughts on where I'm going wrong? Was I suppose to copy the file using ROM manager and paste it someplace? BTW: I'm rooted with 1.0.0 using autonooter.

Dont unzip the file. put the .zip file directly on your sd card in the root directory. Clockwork looks for and installs the .zip

Clockwork, 1.1.0 img, Notification Bar Questions

Question on clockwork recovery and broken root.

As noted in my post 4 up from this one, update for 1.1.0 installed on my nook that i rooted using nooter 0.2 running 1.0.1. Did not use full autnooter method.

I can still side load apks and all apps i installed before updates still work just fine, except for those requiring root like button savior or root explorer.

My question is how do i know if I have clockwork recovery installed and can i install this pre-rooted 1.1.0 img file on sd card and have it work?

I'm thinking I only have 2 options.

  1. Wait for autnooter or nooter 0.X designed for 1.1.0
  2. Restore factory default 1.0.0, update to 1.0.1, run autonooter/nooter0.2 to root 1.0.1, then update to this 1.1.0 pre-root
I didn't use autonooter as I really want to keep the nook launcher and just have apps in extras. Don't want to use other launcher like zeam or launcherpro. Really only want root so button savior and root explorer work.

If I could get notification bar to show on full screen apps to utilize the back swipe I would be fine not being rooted, but that doesn't seem to be an option. Specifically the mvideoplayer app i use to watch movies. Love it because it resumes from where you left off. However when in full screen to watch movie, notification bar is gone. If i hit the n button to go home and then go back into app it picks up in full screen mode and not the list of movies. I have to power cycle device to get list again. This is the only thing really driving me nuts about not having root anymore.

Thoughts on this please.

Thanks!!

.....

Well I booted back to system 1.0.0, installed stock 1.0.1, ran autonooter 2.12.25 and then flashed this 1.1 root hack.

I can't believe it actually worked!! Well aside from the 2 hrs trying to figure out by USB ADB wouldn't find my device on my windblows system.

Thanks to all the feedback and wonderful information in this forum, nookdev, and nookdev irc.

I'm loving it!!! Now time to get Honey 3.0 running on sd card!!

Ok, probably a dumb question - but after flashing this update 1.1.0 - i am rooted etc. and all the stock programs run fine - however i cannot set up my google acct to get into the market. my wifi connection is fine and I have been using it to surf the web - however when it tries to connect with the google servers to sign me in it gives me an error after trying to connect
saying it could not establish a reliable data connection - because i have had a great connection to wifi so far, I am wondering if this a problem with google servers, or if for some reason my nook is trying to connect with something other than the wifi...

any advice?

am stuck in booting clockworkmod recovery

have used the recovery method and the 1.1 rooted update.zip on sd card, the recovery menu loaded the new rom from the sd card, but now I can only boot inot the recovery menu (with the same options (apply update, etc)
Please help
