I have an LG Ally. I hadn't been using it because I got a cheaper tracfone. now I am trying to just use the Ally for its mp3 playing functions. I just put all my music on a micro sd card.
All the songs say unknown artist & unknown name, but most of the album labels work. all I can find is suggestions to download mp3dit or some app that I can't download due to not having actual phone service.
Upon close inspection it seems that the issue is that the song title is under a column labeled "title" on the sd card, but it appears the phones music player pulls the title info from the "name" column which has track 1, track 2, etc. What I want to know is: Is there a way to just change where the phone takes its information from within the file? because the information is there, the phone's music player just doesnt want to grab it.
I just want to be able to go into a file in the phone via the pc & just change the directory it pulls that particular information from.... it just seems like that would be such a simple thing if only it were possible... why does technology have to fight you every step of the way?

One of Android's biggest flaws has always been its problems reading ID3 tags of music files correctly. This is usually most evident with the stock music player apps. MP3 files have the best chance at being read correctly, while WMA files aren't as lucky.

Many people suggest using a tag editor to fix things, but this can be extremely tedious if you have a lot of music. I'd suggest trying 3rd party music players like Mortplayer (free) or Poweramp (free trial); these players use the folder hierarchy rather than the tags, which is usually more accurate.

Since you don't have phone service, just go where there is free wifi (like any Starbucks) and download it over wifi.

I use tag and Rename to update the tags. Its a wonderful software which can change any tags based on file name/ change file name based on tags etc.

for example the situation you told me where the title tag is track1. I had similar issue so what i did was write title tag from my file name. its just 1 click.

I had may issue with my music files now its perfect with album art to title, tracks number, album name, artist etc.
