Screen Lock: Password Option Missing

I recently got a Gionee ELife e6 phone running Android 4.2.1. It seems to be missing the "Password" option to unlock the screen. Is this related to this particular device? Or is there a way to enable / bring back the "Password" option?
Attached is the screenshot of the Security --> Screen Lock setting.

Welcome! You can set a password by choosing either "Pattern" or "Pin". Pattern lets you draw out a pattern on 9 dots while PIN can be anything you want it.

i was looking for an option that would allow me to use letters and numerals for the screen lock. the PIN option only allows the use of numerals.
