Could someone explain to me how Google Voice works?

I was under the impression any texts sent through GVoice will be free of charge since it uses data. When I receive a text message, it forwards to the messaging app (great). However, I am getting charged.

Something odd that I noticed is that when people text me, their number shows up different. I think this happened when I installed WhatsApp (also have Viber installed). I uninstalled WhatsApp, but text messages still show up from this odd number.

I have no idea how this all works but I'd like to correct it. Could someone please help me?

You have to use the GV app for the texts to be sent via data instead of

Sent from my Nexus 4 using AC Forums mobile app

If the texts show up in your messaging app, they came via 2G - and you're charged for that if you're not on an unlimited text plan.
