Recover files from internal memory without rooting

As you can see I have a Galaxy Note II, but I think it's a general problem with either Samsung or newer versions of Android (I read that somewhere). Recovering from an SD card is no problem because you can remove the card from your phone and only connect the card to the computer not the whole phone, but that doesn't work for the internal memory. Recovery programs like Recuva don't recognize the device because it's in MTP mode (I don't know what that is, but I found out the difference) and not a USB drive. Other programs specialized in recovery from Android can't detect the device either since it needs to be in USB mass storage mode. I watched several older videos to find out where the settings for this could be, however, I failed again. I assume it's one of the settings displayed in grey which I have no access to probably because my device is not rooted. Is there any other option?

Make sure you have the appropriate drivers installed onto the computer and see if that helps the program see the internal memory of the device.

There are apps that claim to recover files. However, those often times require root and I'm not sure that there's a lot of success in doing so. Good luck, and let us know if you are successful with retrieving your files.

I doubt the drivers are the problem. As already mentioned, it seems to be that when you connect the device, it's always the so-called MTP mode (Media Transfer Protcol). It doesn't have a letter like a usual USB drive, so programs can't detect it to recover deleted files.

Re: Recover files from internal memory without rooting

Like you said, your phone uses MTP which will not allow this to work. With MTP, the phone's OS handles presenting the files to the laptop/desktop OS. File recovery requires the file system to actually be mounted.

Your best bet is to try one of the Android applications that can handle recovery.

Can you recommend a software for Windows? Because installing an app to the device could overwrite files. Everything I've found so far needs the device shown as a USB device. I've even rooted my phone, USB debugging mode enabled, but Android has generally replaced USB by MTP.

No, because like I said, you literally cannot do it through Windows. If the device is setup to use MTP there is no way to get it to mount as USB Storage. With modern Android phones the application data and /sdcard/ share one partition, typically formatted as ext4. MTP is used as a workaround to present the /sdcard/ folder to Windows without needing to unmount the entire partition (which wouldn't be possible, since that would stop the system from functioning).

Though your problem may be solved I am sure many users are willing to know the workout which is not finally provided in this thread.
here is a solution for this but only possible if you have root access. nothing can be done without root access.

download disk digger, install it in memory card (if files to recover resides in internal memory and vice versa) and recover your files.

link to playstore h**ps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.defianttech.diskdigger&hl=en

replace ** with tt.
