Android email client POP3 flooding - how to stop it/reduce sync frequency?

My ISP has banned my home and work IP because the Gmail/email client on my Nexus 7 2012 polls POP3 email too often. This seems to happen at least every 30 seconds. I've turned off account sync, but it seems to make no difference. Is there some more global setting on syncing that I missed, or is this a virus or Trojan in the system? (A virus scan comes up clean, though.) Help, I need my email!

I'm running the Android Lollipop 5.1 update on a Google Nexus 7 2012 variant, and using the onboard Gmail/email client for my own account and Gmail.

Curious, why are you using IMAP? Either way, I don't believe the gmail app allows you to control that (I could be wrong here). You can try a third party app like our app MailDroid that can control poll frequency if you want to stay on POP.
