I keep finding myself with a low battery either by forgetting to turn my phone off or having the on switch unknowingly pushed when I stuff my phone into the pocket of a messenger bag.

Is there a way I can tell Android ( 4.4 KitKat ) to power down after a certain amount of time if I am not pressing buttons and an app like GPS isn't running?

I find some instructions similar to the ones at this link, but my version of Android does not have a "Scheduled power on and off" menu option ( at least not in the same place ).

I also don't want to power down at a scheduled time. I want it to power down as a result of inactivity.

Thanks for any help.

Hi! I am not sure if "setting a turnoff time" like this is possible. But you can always set an alarm on your phone to charge it by X o'clock every day, if that helps. :)
