how does the current android version display whether gps is searching for your location, vs gps has found your location?

I recall that an early android version would have an icon in the notification area, that was a circle, and it would flash while the gps was trying to find the location, and go static when the gps had found the location.

Then in a later one I think maybe they changed it and removed the flashing icon and maybe it was harder to know whether the gps had found the location or not?

What's the situation at the moment in the sense of, how does the current android os show whether the gps has found its location or not?

I have a nexus 4 if that makes any difference.

Based on the behavior of my LG G4 running Android 6.0, my guess is that the marker goes from gray to white. But I don't really know what the gray version of the icon is supposed to mean.

I'm hoping you or somebody can test it then against an app like GPS Test by Chartcross.

That app has a picture of a circle that goes Green when the GPS has located where it is, and red when it hasn't.

It'd be good to know if the grey/white gps icon reflects the red/green in that app, as that'd indicate that that is what the grey/white mean.

Thanks

My V20 running Nougat only has a white rounded triangle type thing like you see in the middle of these. It doesn't seem to change to indicate searching vs locked on, and only displays when the GPS is activated. The satellite icon here was from the GPS Status and Toolbox app I was using to test.

Testing with the two GPS utilities apps I have, visually the gray icon turns to white at the same time both apps show a locked GPS signal.

Thanks.. Mooncatt and Maniac.. Yeah I see

when location is on then you get the white raindrop image. (as shown in mooncat's image)

And I see the white change, as you say maniac..
The other icon like a bowl with a representation of waves coming out in a direction like top right.. That bowl shape will instead of being filled grey, will fill white, when the GPS has a lock. It goes from having an x which is probably like 0 satellites, to being a grey bowl(maybe some satellites but not enough to get a lock), to being a white bowl indicating gps has got your position.
