My Android Powered Off while Recording, Yikes! Is the file somewhere still?

While recording using an .mp3 recorder, my android ran out of power. I can't find the recording. Could the recorder have closed the file as the android shut off? Is there a way to look for the file? I am asking because the information being recorded is important. Any help would be great! Please, let me know whether I should forget about it or there is something I could try to do to find it.

If you were recording to an SD card, there is the possibility of recovering the beginning and middle of the file using a card reader attached to your computer.
If you were recording to the internal storage, you are probably out of luck.

Which version of android?
Which carrier?
Which recorder app?
