Group SMS not threaded, unable to reply

I saw a few related threads but nothing that gave a clear answer. I'm able to send a text message to multiple recipients, and I'm able to receive a group text from someone else. However, when I receive a group text, my reply goes to the original sender and not everyone in the group. Also, replies from other recipients are not contained in a single thread. That is, they all come through as individual messages. If I reply to one of those responses it goes to that individual and not the group.

Is there a work around for this? I use the stock app but often reply with SMS Popup. Either way, I get the same results. I would think this would be built in to the stock app.

If it matters, I am not rooted, totally stock, on T-Mobile.

I don't have that option in the settings menu.

Yes you do...

I don't do group texts all that often, but Android definitely needs to work on this. I make sure to look for the little MMS above the send triangle as a double check as I've not noticed the mulitple recipients above in the past. Fortunately, nothing too bad was sent unintentionally lol. This is something I expect to see improved on 4.3+ (as Group MMS was only recently a JB feature to begin with...). That said, I definitely receive them from people I know own iPhones on occasion and it's obvious they don't realize it's a group text either.

Have you tried uninstalling SMS Popup and rebooting to check if the app is altering the stock app's settings options.

What settings options do you have?

Uh, all of his mms settings are in the screenshot he posted, they're the same as mine and there is nothing about group messaging. Maybe someone who DOES have this option could post a screenshot...

I'm thinking you all that don't see it must be on a custom ROM or something correct? If not then I don't know. Im running stock & this is what it looks like for me, fine & dandy.

What carrier do you use? I'm on T-Mobile. This is the only difference I can think of. I am bone stock. Not rooted no custom ROM.

Just tried this. It did not change anything, so the SMS Popup app is not the culprit.

I downloaded the app Textra about a month ago when I was getting group texts all separated when sent and with this app, everything works 100% perfectly. Never have had the need to go back to stock SMS app. I also used Handcent and GO SMS, neither did the group texting right either. But Textra has been flawless and only been out in the PS market since late May.

I'd give it a shot. It's a pretty "bare bone" SMS/MMS app, but like I said, it's been great and ZERO issues with group SMS/MMS. Everything is grouped perfectly outbound and inbound :)

I'm stock/rooted, no rom. Definitely don't have that checkbox. Could it be carrier driven?

How group messaging is handled can be carrier driven. It is possible that the settings available are specific to the sim card in the phone. I have always had the group function and I'm with AT&T, also stock rooted.

Interesting. That's my thought too. Can those not using a custom ROM say who their carrier is and whether or not they have the MMS option?

Hey mr_nobody, sonicresidue, et al.:

I had this same issue of a non-visible "group MMS" option. I found the solution on another forum (wish I could remember and give credit where it's due, xda maybe?):
1) Check your sim card's phone number by going to your phone's settings>about phone>status>my phone number. Do you see it?
2) If you don't see it, then call t-mobile customer service. Explain to them that you can't see your phone number on the sim card via phone settings. This is the same problem that happened to me. I told them that I needed it for my MMS settings. My customer rep was able to help me reset the sim card. She directed me to power down my device, eject the sim card, confirm the # on the sim card, reset their settings, and then had me reboot the phone. It worked!

I hope this helps you guys.
