I still hit the wrong letter often enough to be frustrating. Is there any way to get a keyboard with the letters spread further apart? Perhaps an alphabetical keyboard?

Maybe try KeyZag. Don't be too freaked out by the warning that comes up when you try to install it, about how the app might be able to record your keystrokes. That's the standard caution for all 3rd party keyboards, including SwiftKey.

Bear in mind also that any phone touchscreen keyboard worth anything has autocorrect, including the Google keyboard. In other words, it knows you'll hit the wrong letter sometimes and will fix the mistake for you automatically when you press the space bar or begin a new word.

Yeah, but the Google Keyboard word suggestion can be pretty bad sometimes. I type "Welcome to Android Central" pretty often, and there are times when it keeps thinking that I'm trying to type "Woodbine" instead of "Welcome." Why? Who knows.
