USB unmounts when tablet is propped up

I've got a rooted but otherwise stock 4.4.4 2012 Nexus that I've connected to a USB thumbrive via stickmount for over a year (all apps up to date too). Lately the US mount has been unstable if it is propped up in a stand or in any orientation besides flat down on a surface. Basically, I can mount the USB just fine when flat, but it will not remain mounted if moved at all. I first suspected a bad connection with the OTG so I have tried a new one with the same issue - mounts when flat, not when at angles. I've also tried turning off auto-rotate to no effect. I'm wondering if there is some issue with the gyroscope perhaps - has anyone else had this occur?

Yes, I notice it when connecting to my laptop, and when using headphones (only 1 side works, and it's not the headphones). I suspect it is a loose connection or something similar b/c if I squeeze it toward the bottom the other headphone starts working.
