Got my pixel 2 on launch day. Worked great for a few days all of a sudden today camera app keeps crashing with fatal error. App is fully up to date and happens in safe mode. Anyone else experience this ??

Uh oh, that's not good :o Well, my camera app hasn't done that at all yet on my Pixel 2.
I did do a "fresh install" without transferring any data from my previous phone, if that means anything. Hmm.

Had my pixel 2 for about a week and starting a couple days ago, the camera started crashing. Happening so frequently that I'd say the camera is only usable 50% of the time. Seems like if any object is within a few feet of the camera at startup then it quickly crashes. This makes it almost unusable for photographing receipts and documents.

Looks like a common issue. Go into settings - apps - and clear data/cache for the camera app and every other app that uses the camera. My cam stopped crashing after I cleared snapchat data

Spoke too soon - still crashing. I'm going for a phone replacement (for this and other issues) so i hope the next one is issue free

Sorry to hear you are having issues. I started having them with the front facing camera when I installed 8.1.0. I quickly rolled back and said issues are gone.

@osolot729 Have you tried a Factory reset yet? It sucks to have to have to set the phone up again I know ( I had to do it due to a Photos crashing issue), but in the end it was well worth it for me. It's worth a shot perhaps ...

I am having the same issue. I'm lucky if I can take one picture before it freezes. I always elect to send the report--this has been happening for 3 months. I think I will go for a replacement as well.

Your problem also happens in Safe mode? You already tried a Factory Reset and setup as new?

Slightly aging thread but thought I'd share my experiences. I am on my third Pixel 2 with a fourth one coming under warranty replacement. All three phones I've had experienced either fatal camera errors or general camera crashes. It starts with the built-in camera app and then the camera won't function for any app including third party apps. Each round of troubleshooting with Verizon included verifying the camera would not work (cannot even switch between front and rear cameras) and full factory resets without re-loading backup data just to be sure. The troubleshooting on phone #3 last night included a 3-way call with Verizon and Google's Level 3 Support who verified that the phone must be replaced once the factory reset did not bring the camera back online. I'm hoping that the fourth phone will be a charm. Too bad there were some still in stock or I may have gotten a free upgrade to a Pixel 3 (and then would need to buy a new case etc.). The bad news is that Verizon's warranty ends in 2 months and we have much longer to go (a year?) before the phone is paid off. The factory warranty only seems to be 3 months, so I either roll the dice or spend $9/mo in insurance. Hmmmm.

What causes the issue? No one seems to know. I don't think any apps I load are causing the problem as a factory reset doesn't fix the problem. I tried safe mode on one of the past failed units without success. I don't drop the phone, submerge it in water, or even take a lot of pics or shoot video. The only thing I can think of is that I use RAM Mount X-Grips to hold the phone in the car and on a motorcycle. I have active edge off and the X-Grips have rubber mounts which would dampen vibrations I'd think. Strange one--will likely never know what is going on.

I find it amazing how some people have three, four, or more faulty phones and millions of others don't ever get one.

I have a Pixel 2 and I've had no problems. I had another Pixel 2 and gave it to my nephew. His use is totally different from mine but he's had no problems, either.

It is strange, isn't it? We got my mother the exact same phone at the same time, and hers is still running with no camera issues. I've searched online for the problem and there are mentions of it but nothing systemic it seems. I had terrible issues with an Apple phone (iPhone5) in the past but had others that were great (4 & 6). In general I don't have issues with consumer electronics type products. At least I know I'm not alone even if I am in a very small population of suffering users :-D

My camera app just started crashing a month or two ago. It usually only happens when I open it from the lock screen. Really annoying but I'm too lazy to factory reset my phone right now.

Sorry for quoting your whole post - Tapatalk is screwing up (again!) after the latest update today.
Anyway, I wonder what would happen if you reflashed the firmware from scratch? It sounds like something got buggered up in the OS that a Factory Reset isn't fixing. Since you have to send it back anyway, and it sounds like a hard failure, it would be easy to test.
It could certainly be all the vibration from the handlebars (not necessarily the mount itself) - the stacked lens assembly is probably not intended to take that kind of beating.
Finally, I thought that Google bumped the warranty to two years from date of purchase?
