How to delete files from "Files" app

Since the Android 10 update, I haven't been able to find a way to delete a file from the "Files" app. I can press and hold on an item in the list, and it will be selected...but after that, I don't see any option of deleting the selected file (whether it be audio, video, document, etc.).

I'm pretty sure someone's going to point out the obvious solution that's been right in front of me all along...and that's what I hope will happen! Thanks.

Are you asking about the"circled"app? If so, then one option that I see, is after opening the app, I lightly touch a file or picture thumbnail, and a Trash can symbol appears at the top part of the screen.

I'm not seeing this option on my phone. Besides, I'd like to remove many files at once. You can see my selection, but there's no option to delete. No garbage can icon, no option in the upper right-hand corner to delete.

By the way, thanks for taking the time to help me out.

When I go to the Files app, if I select a picture I do not get a delete option. The only options I get are Sort, select, copy. However if I open my ES File manager app, and select the same picture, it does give me a delete option.

Don't select the files in the "Recent Files" list (which is the first screen you see). Tap the menu button at the upper left, then select the Images, Videos, Audio, or Downloads option, and select the files that way. The garbage can should show up then. I'm not sure why the app is quirky that way.

I recommend installing the Files by Google app instead of relying on the very basic stock file manager app.

Thank you! That did the trick. I'm almost positive I didn't have to do that before. That's why it was throwing me off. Thanks to everybody for chiming in I really appreciate all of your input.
