Hi all,

Wanted to see if anyone else has run into this or has any ideas. I chatted with Google tonight and their last option was a factory reset.

I have no passcode or lock screen.

My screen is turned off and I get a text and then I double tap reply, then the whole screen goes black and all I see is an arrow backwards and it doesnt work so I have to turn off and on the screen, then sometimes if I get a text and then hit reply it then goes to my home screen and shows a keyboard with nothing above and the typing goes no where.

We tried resetting the app, updating, force stop, etc, and it happened in a safe boot.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had this problem on the Pixel 3 with Twitter and also experiencing it on the 3a. The app would eventually open after several seconds but it was always frustrating. Never occurred with other apps.

Unfortunately you can't uninstall the text app without rooting (which really isn't difficult on a Pixel), so you can't reinstall Messages. But you can install another SMS app (which will ask if you want to make it the default app when you open it - say yes) and see if the problem persists - it shouldn't.

(If you want to root, you just enable developer options, then unlock the bootloader, then install Magisk. It can always be totally removed any tme you want.)

I got a 3a XL on July 26th - same issues with the Text app. I haven't figured out if it is a certain contact, text messages with photos, or text messages that also show up on my computer. This has happened several times in the few days I've had the phone.

Any suggestions on a good SMS app? This sounds like the easiest place to start for me.

Textra is a good one. If you are on Verizon there Messages Plus app is pretty good

I'll second Textra, it's fantastic with a lot of customization options and I prefer it to Android messages most of the time anyway.

Did any of you with this problem try clearing the Messages app cache/data in Settings>Apps? Be aware that this might erase any saved message threads, though.

After posting here a few days ago and then deleting a couple posts I made when I should have been sleeping, I ended up doing a factory reset on the 3a XL. I am now back using that phone and will see if the reset help the situation.
