I say take shots regularly and then do the "portrait mode" effect yourself with the Toolwiz Photos app. Of course it's not a simple touch of a button but you can get the effect just the way you want it. Snapseed ain't bad either.

Creating the bokeh optically is always best.
Snapseed seems to do a good job for doing it in software.
I have not tried the Google Camera app.
