Is the HTC Backup app in your app drawer? If not, try going to settings, Backup and Reset, then actually touch the first option with the Google icon. It should allow you to select Google or HTC Backup. If that doesn't work, them you probably don't have HTC backup indeed...

Which fastboot are you referring to? Are you talking about the fast boot option in the power settings, or pros and cons of fastboot/ADB on the computer?

I now use the Hangouts app for SMS because I don't have to switch apps to follow conversations with my wife when she chooses to use regular texts vs chat messages. Hangouts puts the entire conversation together in one integrated list.

I think that you should start with AT&T. Will you have to pay for the replacement phone from AT&T? If you have to pay for it, then get a backup phone, and contact HTC. They will probably fix that for free.

I think that you have to change the settings from the Email account itself, and not from the app.

Try putting your SD card in another device, or into a computer. If your computer can still read it and read/write the contents on the card, back up all of it on your PC, and reformat the card. For better results, try putting the card back into the device, and reformat it through Android.
