I have the same carrier and I update my apps the same way you do and almost exclusively over wi-fi, but I haven't noticed this particular situation.

There could definitely be a bug in the system because it HAS worked before. I'm going to redo my lock and Home Screen - wallpapers and such - over again and then try backing up. I'm kind of wondering if removing my SD card at one point might have affected it because my Gallery is all on my card.
