Unplug the device. Open Eclipse. Unlock the screen on the device. Plug in the device. You should now get a dialog box about debugging on the phone.
For some problems you have to click "Open Perspective" (top right corner in Eclipse) and go to DDMS and select the device in the left listview.

I say never wait for new technology. If the product satisfies your needs today just go for it. If you are uncertain look into a cheaper option today and then upgrade later. If you can wait maybe you don't need the product at all.
Go to audio settings and check the volume. Sometimes when I increase the volume there is a varning about high volume. But not always. Sometimes I just can't increase the volume above that level.
On my device the lowest volume is way too loud.
