I have an A13 tablet and it will not boot into recovery with any combination of vol+,vol-, power etc. The only way to reboot it into recovery is via the settings screen and this means that if you can't switch on in the first place it is impossible!

I have also used ROM Manager for backing up but it keeps saying 'can't mount cache' and never actually finishes properly

I believe that you can unroot a phone (ie lock it again) using freely available software like oneclick for instance, and there are others whose names I can't remember at the moment. Basically all you're doing when rooting is giving yourself what PC users call administrator priviliges.

It is best to have antivirus on any device that connects to the internet. AVG do a free app, from the google store, as do other AV manufacturers

As Golfdriver said, rooting will not lose anything. It is basically the equivalent of giving yourself administrator priviliges on a PC
