Is there an AT&T repair site near you? Some bugs of this sort require special access to fix.

AFAIK, once you get to 4.4.2 you cannot go back even with Odin. It fails on a security check.

Was rooted @4.4.2 but the bugfix update of September 4 undid the root status, but apparently left the phone in a weird state and now the 4.4.4 update fails.

This is exactly my situation, down to the 27% and rooting history. I am still with AT&T though, so straightalk probably doesn't matter. Every couple of days now the phone demands its update be attempted again, and it again fails.

Had this problem ("grey battery icon"). Different battery WILL NOT help. Phone needs to go to an AT&T _REPAIR_ shop. There was one near me in Los Angeles and they fixed it in 10 minutes.

I had a problem like this, where the phone "powered up" into a special low energy state showing a grey battery. Putting a fully-charged spare battery in did not help. I took it to the AT&T repair shop and they fixed it under warranty.

Well, it fixed one bug for me. My phone would not look for my home microcell until there was absolutely no service, or I rebooted. Now it finds my microcell within a few seconds when I return home. It was a major annoyance, now fixed.

This was fixed with the September 2014 update.
