Tbh, it sounds like your pen is defective. The specs you posted match up to a real phone so that's a little odd. As for air command popping up when you take the pen out, that's normative. Let me know how the new pen works when you receive it. Sent by my lady friend, Note 3

I think the issue is that those emojis only work as multimedia messages. If you press the menu button, you'll be greeted by a couple of options, one of them being "Insert Smiley". Those work as sms. I know it's not a solution to your problem or the best explanation, but that's what I know...
