in phone dial pad dial *#7465625# to check the SIM status, if it says Not Personalized, it means it's unlocked, if it says Off or Disabled it means its unlocked as well, if it says Active it means you're locked.

That is exactly what I'm looking to do once I get my M8. So I guess best answer for us is to wait for that developer version rom to be officially released by htc, and with help of their tools, I hope I end up doing something right, not brick the phone.

Hello, I know you've posted this question a million years ago, and since it's been that long...have you managed to resolve it by any chance? I'm trying to help a friend with that exact issue, I came across answers such as,"uninstall WhatsApp while in safe mode...", but I'm not sure it will work...
