Coming from the Bionic mine was a dark (black) background too. I prefer it also. I have not found anyway of changing it yet. I tried gosms, you can re-skin it but I still preferred the simplicity of the stock texting app though. Hope someone else has some input on this

go to system-apps-all apps- then scroll to the one you want to freeze. touch it and then select disable.

I felt the same way. It is easy to change though. open up the text app. then go to a conversation you have. on that screen hit menu button, then hit more, then resize text. That is it I am using medium myself
