not sure where you got that idea. i have a N7 that has a non special case, and it charges up just fine.

for pdf rendering, imo you need a 10" tablet. i presume textbooks are mostly pdf? i know on my 7" tablets, i don't even bother trying a pdf. i'm sure an 8" would render a smidge better. screen size should be your defining spec.
