Does anyone know what its like on the 6P? I wonder is it to do with the way it runs on Marshmallow or just on Android in general.

Yes, it regularly locks my phone completely. I think its the cause of another intermittent issue too that crashes my camera resulting in a black screen (in any app that uses the camera), requiring a restart of the phone to remedy.
