I received my S8+ on May 30th, activation was easy. I ported my number over from VZW using Xfinity's activation site and it took about 5 mins. The phone comes with almost zero bloat. You have the choice to install the Xfinity apps at setup of the phone and they can be removed like any other app...

It's throwing an error trying to remount /system as read/write, by default it's mounted read only and you can't make changes to it til you remount it. It's got nothing to do with your sdcard being mounted. Did you type su followed by enter first? You need to be in superuser mode to remount.

How often your polling for updates/notifications/etc from other apps can kill your battery too, what apps do you have polling and how often do they do it? I'm assuming your playing files off the SD card right?

Battery life is dependent on a lot of things, I find playing music locally off the sd card really doesn't drain my battery much though. What else do you have running, how often are you polling for things, are you playing music off the phone or streaming off the Internet?

The file gets deleted after it's installed, if you haven't been writing other things to your sd card, it should be recoverable though... If you're feeling slightly daring you can try to recover it. There should have been an update.zip written to your card as part of the upgrade. Free EASEUS...
