You shouldn't have a problem using any speakers with the Nexus 4, regardless of if you're using Bluetooth or the 3.5mm port. Can you tell us what speakers you're trying to use, how you're trying to connect them, and what the result is? This really shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the info guys. Tasker looks very interesting. Basically the only time I want the ringer on is at home so this sounds pretty ideal. Otherwise I'm out and I probably wouldn't hear the ringer or it would be impolite to have it go off.
