It's already on their issue tracker... no fix in sight. Myself, I gave up, and use Launcher Pro's Twitter widget on the desktop for a quick glance and the mobile web app for everything else.

Hiding the SSID does *nothing* to stop that. All it does is inconvenience legitimate users. Anyone with the slightest clue is going to be able to find out the SSID faster than you can speak it out loud. Non-descriptive SSID's work much better.

It's not "app space". System applications are not installed in the same file system as user applications. You won't gain anything.

How do you know it's not the phone? Depending on what you've done to the phone in order to root it, and depending on whatever the ROM author did, they may well have trashed the WiMax partition and it may well not be working correctly.
