Reading through all these posts below, something has changed. I am using the same cable, same computer (both Windows 7 and Windows 10 machines); you plug in the phone, select USB for MTP or PTP and you can see the directory structure of the phone, but photos are on camera are no longer visible...

I was finally able to pin-point the conditions under which this happens. If you initiate a NEW text message (not a reply to an existing text), holding the phone rotated to landscape mode, the TO: field does not recognize any contacts. If you rotate the phone back to normal portrait mode, it works.

Upgraded from old Moto G to a new Moto G 3rd w/ Marshmallow and functionality and reliability have been a step backwards IMO (yes, 4G was an improvement, 13 mp camera) but otherwise seems buggy, less usable.

About the time I started having problems with the texting app (type characters, they don't show), I also noticed that the TO: column sometimes does not recognize contacts. Type contacts name It doesn't search contacts to show contact names that match (with corresponding phone number). It just...

Stock messaging app. Restarting phone does the trick, but does not eliminate problem completely (i.e. it will crop up eventually again). Clearing the text thread seems to fix problem (again, for a while).

Moto G, 3rd gen, marshmallow - when I type a text message, typed characters do not appear. This happens periodically .. you type the text, nothing appears, but if you leave and return, you can see the characters typed.

I've had this problem with both my old Moto G (1st gen?) and current Moto G (3rd gen). In fact, part of motivation to upgrade was to solve this problem. It is very, very annoying. First and foremost a smartphone should be a PHONE !

One solution is Settings > Developer Options > Select USB Config works, BUT a) you have to first get the phone into developer mode, which is a pain (although done just once), then b) it seems you have to do it each and every time you connect the cable, i.e. it doesn't seem to want to remember...
