Nope, I haven't found any solution. I guess most people must just be using IMAP or Exchange email accounts, or don't mind the phone deleting mail from the server, and haven't noticed the issue. INCREDIBLY ANNOYING!

There's no way to surf the web with just a thumb while holding the phone in one hand now. I was pissed when I discovered it was gone. It would have been so easy to just make it an optional setting--why eliminate it completely??

Since the 4.1.2 update, when I delete emails from the inbox, they reappear next time the phone syncs. Then if I refresh, some of them will disappear again and it shows 3 or 4 unread (which were also already deleted). Then the next time the phone syncs, all 30-60 emails are back. It's POP3...

I got 4.1.2 the other day and I haven't noticed anything improved. Several things I don't like, however: Bezel zooming is gone (why not make it optional?) Scrolling around is now fixed up-down/left-right, no longer free-scrolling all over the screen. ^---These two basically make it impossible...
